Anna, Jessie and Marky

Anna Hiller, Jessie Salter and Marky Mutchler are the great LSU students that made the Emilie Snethlage expedition possible! During two years, they faced an incredible amount of paperwork and bureaucracy to get the permits to work in Brazil. After a lot of uncertainty, two days before flying to Brazil, they had their visas printed in the Brazilian consulate in Houston.

In the expedition, they did an amazing job on finding cool birds in the field, and preparing beautiful bird specimens!!! Anna, Jessie and Marky are the living proof that hard work, resilience, and patience can take one to incredible places, such as the Juruá River!

Gigi and Donna!

Gigi Lima and Donna Schmitt! Two amazing women, ornithologists, and bird skinners! Together they have prepared more than 16,000 bird specimens along their lives!

It was an honor to have Gigi and Donna in the Emilie Snethlage Expedition! During our expedition, they have worked 12-18 hours every day to build a remarkable inventory of the Juruá bird fauna! Thank you for your dedication, your lessons, and your friendship!

Working with the local communities!

Besides being a scientific venture to sample an unexplored corner of the Amazon Forest, the Emilie Snethlage Expedition was also an effort to spread the word to the local communities about women in science, bird diversity, and environmental conservation!

Bruna and Bianca took the local children for bird walks around the communities of Gume do Facão, Chué, Chibauá and Ouro Preto! They also had productive meetings with the community members to discuss the importance of protecting the forest, and following the fishing and hunting regulations.

Thank you, Bruna and Bianca, for sharing your love for nature with the Juruá population!

We made it!

The Emilie Snethlage Expedition is over! After one month in the field, we are glad to be back to our homes with amazing new data and good stories to tell!

I am super grateful to the brave women that agreed to be part of this crazy and intensive effort to sample such a tough corner of the Amazon… I have never seen such dedication, consideration, and compromise amongst the members of the crew in an expedition before!

Stay tuned for news, pictures and videos!

The Emilie Snethlage expedition would not be possible without Tammie Jackson! Tammie works in the LSU Museum of Natural Science administration. She helps with finances, flights, logistics, equipment... she is in touch with our team all the time, making sure our trip is super well organized and safe! Thank you, Tammie, you are a life saver!

Meeting in Alaska

Anna, Jessie and Glaucia participated on the AOS meeting in Anchorage, Alaska from June 24th to 28th. It was a great opportunity to spread the word about the Emilie Snethlage Expedition, and also to have encounters with moose, bears, orcas, puffins and ptarmigans. Photos by Marco Rego.
