Of all the Amazon's major tributaries, the only one Emilie Snethlage never sampled was the Juruá.
Habitat in the Juruá river drainage holds more than 700 bird species, yet has been little explored by biologists.
The drainage encompasses multiple well-documented contact zones. These are areas where different bird species meet, one of the possible outcomes of which is hybridization. Currently little genetic data exists to understand the extent of hybridization or the evolutionary processes responsible for contact zones.
In August 2019, we will do an expedition to document the bird fauna from the Juruá River region.
In honor of Emilie Snethlage, the expedition will be lead and undertaken exclusively by women!
We intend to raise awareness about gender equality in STEM fields, with a special focus on logistically challenging ornithological field work in remote, unexplored areas of the world!

De todos os grandes tributários do Rio Amazonas, o único que Emilie Snethlage nunca amostrou foi o Rio Juruá.
A bacia do Rio Juruá abriga mais de 700 espécies de aves, no entanto pouco desta diversidade foi amostrada por biólogos.
Esta bacia abriga múltiplas zonas de contato. Ou seja, áreas onde diferentes espécies de aves se encontram. Um dos possíveis resultados deste contato é hibridização. Atualmente há poucos dados genéticos para entender a extensão dessa hibiridizaçãoou os processos evolutivos responsáveis pela formação destas zonas de contato.
Em Agosto de 2019, faremos uma expedição para documentar a avifauna da região do Rio Juruá.
Em uma homenagem a Emilie Snethlage, a expedição será liderada e feita apenas por mulheres!
Nós pretendemos criar conscientização sobre igualdade de gênero na ciência, com foco específico em trabalho de campo ornitológico em áreas remotas e inexploradas do mundo!
